Evaluation

The Friends of Ringo Ishikawa launched in May 2018 as a solo-developed indie game and has received periodic updates over the years. The most significant recent development was the "EX Update," which shipped on January 18, 2025, adding local co-op, updated character sprites, bicycles, new streets, a fishing mini-game, updated battle mechanics, and more. The developer followed this with smaller patches through early 2025, including free roam mode, new achievements, and a completed Brazilian Portuguese localization. On January 21, 2025, the developer stated they were "not sure for how long I'll be working on the game, maybe a couple of days or weeks. Mostly I'm already satisfied with it" — a clear signal that the EX Update cycle represented the end of their planned additions. On April 13, 2026, the developer announced a brand new game ("The Concrete Sutra #1"), confirming their creative focus has moved to a new project. A July 15, 2026 post celebrating a magazine feature noted "3 games later Ringo still sells the best," further framing this game as part of their back catalog rather than an active project — and included only a speculative aside about a possible physical Switch edition ("maybe?"). The one patch since early 2025 — a June 30, 2026 feature restoring old-style speech bubbles as a player option — is a minor quality-of-life tweak, not a content addition. The only DLC ever released, a manga companion piece from October 2020, is fully shipped. There are no unreleased DLC entries and no announced future content for this game.

About this game

A highschool gang leader Ringo Ishikawa trying to live through his last autumn before graduation. With his best friends.

You should play it if:

1) You're fond of good stories with strong dialogues (especially about growing up)
2) You're a fight games enthusiast (you'll get your hands on some unique brawl mechanic and I promise you'll be satisfied)
3) You're into some yakuza-delinquent aesthetics

Basically, the game is an existential open world beat'em up with some school sim elements. It has a little of everything: a town to explore, day-night cycle, npc on their schedule, battle grinding, school grinding, mini-games (ping-pong, billiard, video-poker, video-game console with one game...) and so on.

But the main thing is the story I'm trying to tell. And I designed the game to make you feel this story. So it's not about rival gangs, or taking over turfs, or anything. You just live there and feel. And that's all.
