Evaluation
The Walking Vegetables launched on September 27, 2017 and received a burst of active post-launch updates over the following weeks — a day-one content patch, several weekly Friday updates adding new weapons, enemies, buildings, and a hard mode, and a Halloween update on November 1, 2017 that added a new boss, enemy, and weapon. That Halloween update represents the last major content release on record.
On November 7, 2017, the developer announced plans for a significant overhaul of the game's level structure and an engine upgrade from GameMaker Studio 1 to GameMaker Studio 2, signaling ongoing ambition for the game. However, by February 6, 2018, the developer posted a candid personal update explaining that financial pressures had forced them to seek regular employment outside of game development, that they had not worked on the game for approximately two months, and that while they still wanted to continue, all further development would be part-time and significantly slower. This was the last recorded communication from the developer.
No further updates, patches, or announcements have appeared since February 6, 2018 — now more than eight years ago. The planned engine overhaul and level system redesign described in November 2017 show no signs of having been completed or released. There are no unreleased DLC listings, no active roadmap, and no subsequent developer communication indicating the project resumed. The store description makes no mention of future content.
Given the developer's candid acknowledgment of financial difficulty and indefinite slowdown, combined with over eight years of complete silence, it is reasonable to conclude that the game's active development ended around the time of the last content release. The Halloween update on November 1, 2017 is the most defensible endpoint for when the game's content became complete in practice.
Evidence
Developer explains they have not worked on the game for roughly two months due to financial hardship and depression, and is now seeking outside employment. They express hope to continue in a reduced, part-time capacity but make no concrete commitments. This is the last recorded communication from the developer.
Halloween update ships with a new boss (Punk'o Lantern), a new enemy type, and a new magic weapon — the last confirmed major content release.
