Train Sim World 2 launched on August 20, 2020 and received an extensive library of paid DLC routes and locomotive add-ons throughout its lifespan — 52 in total, all of which have now been released. The game's final DLC, Island Line 2022: BR Class 484 EMU, shipped on July 19, 2022.
Shortly after that, Dovetail Games announced Train Sim World 3, which launched in September 2022 as the next installment in the series. The September 2022 announcement confirmed that Train Sim World 2 would no longer be available to purchase as a standalone product after TSW3's release, though existing add-ons would remain purchasable and compatible with the new game. Players could also transfer their TSW2 progress into TSW3. This marked a clear transition away from TSW2 as an actively developed platform.
By August 2024, Dovetail announced Train Sim World 5, further confirming that the series had moved well beyond Train Sim World 2. There have been no new DLC releases for TSW2 since July 2022, and no developer communications suggest any further content is planned for it. The game's content is complete, and players who own it can continue playing all 52 released add-ons — many of which are also forward-compatible with newer Train Sim World titles.
Evidence
Dovetail confirmed that Train Sim World 2 would no longer be available to purchase after Train Sim World 3's release on September 6, 2022, signalling the end of TSW2 as an active platform. Existing add-ons would remain purchasable and compatible with TSW3.
