Evaluation

Wizards and Warlords launched on September 25, 2020 and has been developed by Valravn Games as a solo project. The game received a sustained stream of patches and content updates from launch through March 17, 2023 (patch 1.0.3.65), adding systems like grid-based battles, the Mythos Editor, custom unit types, new spells, and many balance and quality-of-life improvements. After March 2023, the developer went silent for over three years with no public communications — a significant gap that had previously raised concern about whether development had effectively ended. However, on August 30, 2026, the developer broke that silence with a new opt-in beta post (1.0.5.1b). In it, the developer explicitly acknowledged the long pause and stated that "support for Wizards and Warlords is picking up again." This update migrates the game to a current Unity LTS version and a modern Steamworks SDK, and the post clearly frames this as a foundation-setting step before further improvements. The developer writes: "After that: actual improvements to the game" — and goes on to describe plans to fix major issues, improve core functionality, and flesh out parts of the game that never received proper attention, while tempering expectations given the age of the codebase. Development is clearly active again as of August 30, 2026, with the developer signaling that more substantive updates are intended to follow this foundational beta.
Evidence
Developer returns after a long pause with opt-in beta 1.0.5.1b, citing engine and SDK updates as a foundation for future improvements. Explicitly states 'actual improvements to the game' will follow and describes intent to fix major issues, improve core functionality, and flesh out underserved game areas.

About this game

Wizards and Warlords is an indie turn-based strategy game, where you play in a randomly generated fantasy world, filled with rival wizards and warlords. Create a customized sovereign or choose from one of many predefined templates.

Blending 4X with grand strategy and simulation, the game offers a plethora of settings and randomly generated cultures and races. It is up to you if you want to fight great wars, crushing powerful rivals in the pursuit of world conquest - the challenge of survival in a grim and dangerous world, perhaps even beset by planar invaders and ancient evils - or a balanced game, where you control but one of many realms in the world, immersing yourself in an emergent story driven by random events and the interactions of randomly generated cultures and factions.

Manage your cities and fortresses, increase your power through research and industry, design arcane constructs, recruit armies and heroes, explore and exploit dungeons and ruins, and experience random events and event chains. You can mod several aspects of the game and create your own world maps.
