Evaluation

Ys IX: Monstrum Nox launched on PC on July 6, 2021 as a complete, self-contained JRPG. All four DLC items — a consumable bundle, attachments bundle, costume bundle, and bonus items pack — were released on launch day, indicating they were never part of an ongoing content plan but rather pre-packaged bonuses bundled with the game at release. Post-launch, the developer (PH3, the PC porting studio) delivered meaningful quality-of-life and feature updates: a significant patch in July 2021 added input remapping and graphics improvements, a January 2022 update added local co-op play and 16:10 aspect ratio support, and a May 2022 patch delivered notable CPU performance optimizations. These updates reflect the developer's commitment to polishing the PC version rather than adding story or gameplay content beyond the base game. Since May 2022, developer communications have been limited to maintenance: a December 2024 patch (v1.1.4) fixed a compatibility issue with Steam's achievement API. That post explicitly noted it was part of a broader effort to patch several of PH3's older releases for the same issue — a routine compatibility fix, not a content update. The only other notable post since launch was a July 2024 announcement promoting the next entry in the series, Ys X: Nordics — a separate game, not an expansion to Ys IX. No future content for Ys IX has been announced or hinted at. The game shipped as a complete story-driven RPG, all DLC released on day one, and the developer's post-launch activity has wound down to occasional maintenance. The January 17, 2022 local co-op update represents the last substantive content addition to the game.

Story

"What is real is defined by what is not.
Who one is defined by who one isn't."
To move forward, one must accept these truths.
"Yes, in this prison—this cradle—
my dreams and reality became one."

Renowned adventurer Adol “the Red” Christin and his companion Dogi arrive at Balduq, a city annexed by the Romun Empire, only for Adol to be detained before setting foot inside. While imprisoned, he meets a mysterious woman named Aprilis who turns him into a Monstrum, a being with supernatural Gifts and the power to exorcise monsters. Now, Adol must ally with his fellow Monstrum to fend off the fearsome threats emerging from a shadowy dimension called the Grimwald Nox, as well as unravel the mysteries of the Monstrum curse, and the truth behind the unrest within Balduq.
