Zombie Panic! Source is a long-running free-to-play cooperative survival-horror game that has been actively developed since its 2008 release. The team has shipped a sustained stream of major updates over the years: v3.1 in October 2020, v3.2 in February 2022, v3.2.5 in December 2022, v3.2.8 in April 2024, v3.2.9 in October 2024, and the v3.3 Halloween Update on October 30, 2025. In December 2025, the team lead published a detailed "Future of Zombie Panic! Franchise" post laying out a substantial roadmap of planned content and improvements. This includes migrating the game to the TF2 SDK update-branch (bringing 64-bit support, Steam Networking peer-to-peer play, and networking improvements), a redesigned barricade system, a reworked Police Station map with a new Objective mode version, scoreboard and UI/UX improvements, brand-new player animations (a new skeleton rig already in progress), a new Lever Action Rifle weapon (the Winchester 94, already shown in preview images), and a full character model overhaul for both teams. On March 10, 2026, the team launched the original classic "Zombie Panic!" mod as a separate Steam title. In that announcement, the team noted that voice lines currently used in ZPS are placeholders "subjected to change in future updates, which will also include new soundtracks," confirming that content additions for ZPS remain ongoing even after that release. With the last developer communication on March 10, 2026 — approximately seven months before today's date of October 8, 2026 — and a large number of explicitly announced but unshipped features described in the December 2025 roadmap, the game clearly has substantial planned content still in development. The established update cadence (major updates roughly every 6–12 months) means the next major release could arrive at any time, and the developer has not signaled any slowdown or conclusion of development.

The Teams

As a Survivor, unlock large arsenals of firearms, explosives and improvised melee weapons. Can you stop the waves of undead? Will you engage the horde head-on, or barricade and fortify while your friends play sniper? If all else fails, PANIC! Then run as if your lives depend on it… for they surely do.

As a Zombie, you’re free to hunt the living like the rabid beast you are. Feast upon their flesh and unlock your inner berserker. Heightened zombie night-vision gives you the upper hand in dark environments. Infect survivors as the carrier zombie (patient zero), to weaken their defenses, then sadistically watch them turn on each other. Use it all to your advantage to strategics, ambush, conquer and destroy your oblivious living counterparts.

The Gamemodes

Zombie Panic! Source hosts a variety of game modes for excellent replayability. Explore the zombie apocalypse with:

Survival Mode: Put your ability to scavenge and survive to the test. Easily the top player choice.

Objective Mode: You’re on a mission. Whether it’s to escape or defeat the horde, you’d better use your brainz to find those keys, get the power back on, hack that computer, and get to the chopper! Otherwise… I think you know what happens.

Hardcore Mode: For experienced zombie connoisseurs, you and your teammates get to enjoy pitting yourselves against extra tough foes, and even rougher odds under a timer.

Custom Made: Enjoy all kinds of unofficial gamemodes by community modders that push the game to its limits using AngelScript or SourceMod plugins.
