Evaluation

Budget Backrooms is a free-to-play solo-developed indie game currently in Early Access, having launched on October 13, 2023. The game is still explicitly unfinished and continues to receive regular updates. The developer has shipped 5 major content releases during Early Access: the initial launch build (0.0.12, October 13, 2023), a Christmas update (0.0.13, December 23, 2023), a substantial update adding new systems (0.0.14, August 26, 2024), a holiday update with a candid developer note (0.0.15, December 24, 2024), and version 0.0.16 "The Singularity" (October 18, 2025), which added a new level (Level 5), reworked voice acting, and backend improvements explicitly described as preparing for an upcoming multiplayer mode. This is supplemented by multiple feature patches and bug fixes throughout. The most recent update, version 0.0.17 (April 3, 2026), added German localization, quality-of-life improvements, and notably mentions that Level 6 has "finished prototyping" but is "not accessible yet" — a clear signal that more content is still being built and will ship in the future. On December 24, 2024, the developer posted a candid reflection acknowledging a slowdown due to personal stress, but explicitly stated they were not giving up. The subsequent updates in 2025 and April 2026 confirm development continued as promised. No 1.0 release date has been announced. The version numbering (still at 0.0.17 alpha) and the presence of at least one level (Level 6) in active prototyping both confirm the game is far from a complete release. The last developer communication was April 3, 2026, which is approximately 6 months before today's date (October 1, 2026). Given the established update cadence — major releases roughly every 4–8 months — this silence sits at the outer edge of the historical window but does not yet exceed it in a way that would suggest the project has stalled, especially given the active development signals in the April 2026 post itself.
Evidence
Version 0.0.17 shipped with new localization, UI fixes, and level changes. Level 6 noted as having 'finished prototyping' but not yet accessible, indicating more content is being built.

About this game

Welcome to Budget Backrooms, a free-to-play game set in the classic Backrooms creepy pasta, this time keeping it low-budget.

You find yourself in a mysterious place, somehow you noclipped into the Backrooms, you get up, pick up your flashlight and start exploring the corners of the so-called 'Level 0' best known as "The Lobby".

Levels

The levels in this game have a unique and linear layout, you will find plenty of content to explore, easter-eggs and 'Sub-Levels'.

Immersive Atmosphere

Budget Backrooms tries its best to deliver a constant and immersive Backrooms experience throughout the gameplay, from sound effects to modest graphics quality. The game uses binaural audio so playing with headphones is strongly recommended.

Entities

There are currently 3 Entities in this game, but the ones that stand out are The Howler which will chase you if you get too close, and The Smiler killing you if you shine light in his area.

Community Driven

If you want to contribute to the game you can do so by joining the active Discord Server or by contributing to the source code on GitHub.
