Evaluation

Fear the Dark Unknown launched on December 2, 2019 as a survival horror game with two playable characters. In the months following launch, the developer actively patched the game with fixes and quality-of-life improvements. On March 30, 2020, the developer released the "Survival Edition" — a free major update that added new difficulty levels for puzzles, new enemy mechanics, new weapons, improved graphics, new playable sequences, additional puzzles, new cinematics, improved AI, and better optimization. This appears to be the developer's capstone update, rounding out the game's content. Following this update, only minor bug fixes and balance tweaks were released through April 13, 2020. There has been no developer communication of any kind since April 13, 2020 — no new content, no announcements, no roadmap, and no DLC has been listed on the store. With only one major post-launch content drop across its entire history and no subsequent activity in over six years, the game launched and was completed as a fixed, single-player narrative experience. No further content is expected.

About this game

"It is said that our worst fears come from within. But... What if there were a greater fear than we are capable of conceiving? What if that terror were much closer than we think? Suffering is the only way. Fear is a necessary evil."

What kind of curse does the Beresford mansion keep inside? For 200 years its inhabitants have suffered the consequences of an unknown shadow, a dark being who walks among us, and whose existence extends beyond what we imagine.

Now James and Chloe will face the ultimate test of their lives. They will know the true horror. The suffering of a father. The despair of a daughter. The clock is ticking and the survival game can no longer be stopped.
