Last Year launched on Steam on December 9, 2019 and received a series of updates through 2020, including a new map (The Mine) in June 2020. Development then went quiet, with a 2020 post acknowledging funding difficulties. The game relaunched as free-to-play and continued receiving patches into 2023, including a balance update in May 2023 and a bug-fix patch in August 2023.
In March 2024, the developer announced a significant pivot: rather than continuing Last Year with a Chapter 2 update, they are packaging the Unreal Engine 5 port and new content together as a new, paid sequel called "Forest Hills: The Last Year." That sequel was made available to wishlist on Steam and is described as introducing new characters, Fiends, and maps. This means the announced content — The Warlock, The Dryad, Abigail, and The Cemetery map — is on its way, just under a different store listing.
However, March 18, 2024 is the last communication from the developer on any channel, and no release date or pricing has been confirmed for Forest Hills. The store description for the current game still promises "free content updates in the form of Chapters," though the developer's March 2024 post supersedes this by redirecting future content to the sequel. Given the studio's history of funding challenges and the extended silence since March 2024 with no launch window for the sequel, the status of that announced content remains uncertain.
