Pathless Woods

Pathless Woods is an Early Access survival sandbox game inspired by ancient Chinese heritage, developed by the small indie studio AniYa Games Studio. It launched on Steam Early Access on April 2, 2024. Since the previous evaluation on September 10, 2026, development has moved quickly. The major v0.6.0.0 update — described by the developer as "the largest update Pathless Woods has ever received" — was on a public test branch as of September 8, 2026. It has now been fully released to the default branch as of September 24, 2026 (through version v0.6.1.7), following a rapid series of beta patches between September 21–24, 2026. This update brings a complete world restructure dividing the single map into multiple distinct realms, 12 new Lord-class bosses, a full river system, ranged weapons with an attachment system, an item star-rating quality system, controller support, and major multiplayer and performance improvements. The developer's April 3, 2026 return post confirmed that new gameplay features and content are already scheduled for development, and the v0.6.0.0 patch notes explicitly state that the new realm structure "lays the groundwork for adding brand-new realms over time." This makes clear that additional content is planned beyond what has just shipped. The studio's history remains relevant context. By August 2024 they had shrunk to three people due to funding difficulties, and by late 2024 funds ran out entirely with the core team temporarily disbanding. Development resumed on April 3, 2026, funded by a mobile version of Pathless Woods and AI-assisted development. The developers were transparent that they can only dedicate roughly half their capacity to the game, and that updates will be steady but not frequent. This means progress toward a full 1.0 release will be gradual and remains dependent on continued mobile funding. The September 24, 2026 major update post is an encouraging sign of resilience — the team delivered what they promised after a 21-month gap on the default branch. However, the game is explicitly still in Early Access and the developer has not indicated when or if a 1.0 release is planned in the near term.
