Evaluation

The Black Watchmen launched on August 27, 2015 as a Permanent Alternate Reality Game (PARG). Over its first few years, Alice & Smith delivered a steady stream of content: Season 2 (December 2015), the Mother Russia DLC (August 2016), Alone in the Dark Web (December 2016), and the Whitechapel DLC (December 2017). A related companion experience, Ahnayro, received its full release in December 2016. Throughout 2016–2018 the studio was actively expanding the universe, recruiting playtesters for NITE Team 4, and signaling a healthy development pipeline. Then, after a long quiet period, the developer returned on December 21, 2023 with a notable announcement: a new live sandbox experience called Rose Cottage was launched as part of a Steam client update, and the developer explicitly stated that "something major is coming to The Black Watchmen" with regular updates planned for the new environment. However, as of June 14, 2026 — more than two and a half years after that announcement — no further official communication has appeared. The promised "something major" and the regular Rose Cottage updates have not materialized publicly. This leaves the game in an uncertain position: new content was clearly promised, but there has been no follow-through or explanation from the developer. Players interested in that promised content have no way to know whether it is still in development, delayed, or quietly cancelled.

The World of The Black Watchmen

The Black Watchmen are a paramilitary group dedicated to protecting the public from dangerous phenomena beyond human understanding: ritualistic murder, occult secret societies, and paranormal activity, to name but a few.

As a global organization, The Black Watchmen offer a wide range of skills and services for covert missions anywhere in the world, on behalf of any group, corporation or government that can afford them. Often called in as a last resort, The Black Watchmen pride themselves on their discretion, strength and efficiency.

To maintain objectivity in the field, you, as an agent, are never informed of the identity of the client. You are given only mission parameters and told how to distinguish friend from foe, but the lines are often blurred…

  • Agent Map: See the locations of your fellow agents around the world, and keep an eye out for potential location-based missions.
