Evaluation

Volcanoids has been in Early Access since January 29, 2019, and remains firmly in active development. After a difficult stretch involving burnout, leadership changes, and a period of reduced communication, the team published an honest status update on April 10, 2026 confirming development was continuing and announcing a public test branch for a brand-new island. That preview launched on May 28, 2026, delivering three new locations (Orchard Port, Hydromechanicum, and Rosegate Port), a reworked quest system, and a new Steam Roller vehicle — though the developer openly acknowledged it was a rough beta build. Since launch, the developer has maintained a regular patching cadence. On June 19, 2026, they published a detailed roadmap: the Summer 2026 update would bring the classic Volcanoids gameplay loop (full drillship progression, resource gathering, combat, and a Boss Drillship endgame) to the New Island. The Fall 2026 update is planned to add three more named locations — Wrenchlow Mining Village, Darksaddle Coal Mine, and the Seismotorium Research Station — alongside improved gunplay. The July 11, 2026 dev update confirmed the Summer update is on track and revealed that white-box layouts for roughly a third of the island's full location roster are already in progress, including a Capital City, Imperial Rose Cruise Ship, Ravensdale Mansion, and a dedicated Boss location. The most recent post, dated August 6, 2026, delivered another feature patch (2.0.206.0) with gameplay and vehicle improvements, showing the developer is actively iterating on the preview branch. There is no indication of a 1.0 release date, and the developer has a well-communicated pipeline of content still ahead. This game is a long way from being finished.
Evidence
Feature patch 2.0.206.0 shipped with Orchard Port gameplay improvements, expanded Journal, Steam Roller vehicle upgrades, softened death penalty, and camera/terrain fixes — the most recent developer communication.

About this game

Volcanoids is a base-building open-world survival shooter that replaces the boring old base with a steampunk drill. Alone or with up to 3 other crewmates, explore an ever-changing volcanic island, build out your drill, and fight hostile machines to reveal what's been hiding in the depths of the underground.

EXPLORE AN EVER-CHANGING VOLCANIC ISLAND

Explore a seemingly abandoned island cursed by persistent eruptions. Utilize your drillship's ability to travel underground to survive these eruptions as you discover new parts of the island, gather resources, and uncover secrets.

BATTLE ROBOTS AND DESTROY THEIR MACHINERY

Battle hostile mining robots of all shapes and sizes who roam the island's surface as well as underground. Capture any of their resources and technology that might be useful and destroy the rest.

CRAFT, UPGRADE AND AUTOMATE

The "drillship" is your very own mobile fortress. Customize it from inside out using the building system. Progress through technology tiers to upgrade, expand, automate, and weaponize different parts of the drillship.
