Evaluation

Annie and the Art Gallery is a free, short horror RPG that launched on April 12, 2022. The developer — a solo creator — shipped a steady stream of patches and quality-of-life improvements throughout 2022 and into 2023, covering dialogue polish, art redesigns, difficulty refinements, and accessibility features. In September 2022, the developer announced they were shifting focus to a new project called Tale of Two Sardines and signaled that Annie and the Art Gallery would stop receiving major updates. Despite that, patches continued sporadically — including one in January 2025 that added new dialogue options and art improvements — showing the developer remained engaged with the game. On January 27, 2026, the developer formally announced that Tale of Two Sardines was cancelled entirely. In that same post, they committed to their next project, MYMEMORY. On March 21, 2026, Annie and the Art Gallery received what appears to be its final update: Mac support and bug fixes — a goal the developer had been working toward since launch. The developer described this as a long-standing ambition now fulfilled. The developer's newest game, MYMEMORY, launched on April 6, 2026, with the developer expressing hope to continue making new games going forward. There are no announced updates, DLC, or future content plans for Annie and the Art Gallery. The sole DLC — a digital artbook — shipped on launch day. With Mac support now delivered and the developer's attention turned to new projects, Annie and the Art Gallery appears to be a complete, finished product.

About this game

Annie and the Art Gallery is a short, free horror RPG that aims to capture the feel from classic RPGMaker horror games. You play as Annie, a girl who's finally got a ticket to the new art exhibit. When she gets there, however, she's dragged into a bizarre conflict that takes her through the museum's haunted basement. Help Annie solve puzzles, figure out who to trust, and find out the truth of what happened there years before.

Some random and possibly cool features:

  • Unique hand-drawn art style.
  • Save at any time.
  • Ghost girl(s).
  • Animated cutscenes.
  • Traps, sudden deaths, and chase sequences.
  • Multiple difficulty options.
  • A non-silent protagonist in an RPGMaker horror game.
  • Maybe a plot twist.

Note from the developer:

Thank you for playing my game! I am a solo developer based in the New England region, and it really means a lot that you've read this far! Annie and the Art Gallery is a love letter to classic RPGMaker horror hits such as Witch’s House and Ib. Inspiration was also drawn from more contemporary RPGMaker hits such as Oneshot and Omori.
