Evaluation
Fallen Earth Classic is a free-to-play massively multiplayer online RPG that has been running — with interruptions — since 2012 under Little Orbit's stewardship. The game is designed as an indefinitely operated online service.
The game has been offline since April 1, 2026, when the servers began crashing uncontrollably due to failures in the original 2009-era server software — a sprawling codebase of over 300,000 lines across more than a dozen specialized server processes. A separate power surge and fire at the EU data center further complicated recovery. Little Orbit determined that the only path forward was a full rewrite of the backend on modern infrastructure.
On July 21, 2026, the developer published a detailed technical update confirming meaningful progress on the server rewrite: the rebuilt cluster can now start up, load game zones, spawn NPCs, and allow players to enter the world. However, significant work remains, including extending parallel-read systems to collision and line-of-sight checks, further stress testing, and a system-by-system bug sweep. The developer explicitly declined to commit to a return date.
Three days later, on July 24, 2026, the developer published a second development blog focused on the client side of the rebuild, revealing that the game client is also being rewritten in Unity. This is a substantial parallel effort: importing content from over 30 custom file formats, reconstructing character appearance data, rebuilding approximately 50 interface screens, and implementing new environmental systems. As of that post, the team had achieved a basic playable slice — login through character selection to entering a world area — but described much more work ahead.
On August 6, 2026, the developer announced a studio-wide CEO AMA scheduled for August 12, 2026, covering Fallen Earth among other titles. No post-AMA update has appeared in the available news data.
The developer remains engaged and communicating actively, but both the server backend and the game client are undergoing simultaneous major rebuilds. No timeline for the game's return has been committed to.
Evidence
Developer publishes a client-side development blog describing a full Unity client rebuild: importing 30+ custom file formats, reconstructing character data, rebuilding ~50 UI screens, and building new environmental systems. A basic playable slice (login to entering world) is now functional, but significant work remains.
Developer explains that servers have been offline since April 1, 2026 due to catastrophic failure in legacy 2009-era server software. A full backend rewrite is underway. The rebuilt cluster can now start the world and allow players to enter, but hardening, stress testing, and a bug sweep remain. No return date given.
