Spelunky 2 launched on September 29, 2020 and received a substantial post-launch support cycle focused on two major areas: gameplay polish and online multiplayer. The developer (Mossmouth) shipped online multiplayer as a major addition in December 2020, then spent roughly two years refining it — culminating in the launch of full cross-platform cross-play across Steam, PS4/PS5, Xbox, and Switch with patch v1.26 on September 20, 2022, followed by a small v1.27 patch on September 23, 2022.
In the v1.26 announcement, the developer explicitly addressed the question of future content: single-player content additions will not be pursued ("No, our focus will continue to be on multiplayer and online. That's a personal preference for me as a creator, to try and preserve the singleplayer experience as much as possible after release"), and stated that all major goals for online multiplayer had been met. While they noted they would continue monitoring feedback and making improvements to the online experience, this falls into maintenance territory rather than new content development.
The only DLC listed is the game's soundtrack, released the day after launch. No expansion, season pass, or additional content packs have ever been listed or announced. The news history shows no posts after September 23, 2022 — nearly four years of silence from the developer. A Bigger and More Dynamic World, with So Much to See and Do
Spelunky 2's world is even denser than the one in the original game, offering many more areas, characters, traps, and items, as well as new ways to interact with them (and for them to interact with each other). The world has expanded in other ways, too, with branching paths and multi-layered levels adding a third dimension to the classic 2d platforming. Animals can also be tamed and ridden. And dynamic liquid physics create new challenges and make the world feel extra reactive and alive.
Build a Community, Make Friends
Back in Base Camp, characters you unlock will mill about and relax between runs, offering encouragement and advice. As you explore, your camp will expand and develop into a thriving little community to welcome you whenever you need a break from exploring. While there, you can also access shortcuts and practice your moves in safety.
